The film combines hand-made animation techniques with digital

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated film that combines old 2D comic book drawing techniques with the latest computer-generated visual effects, topped the North American box office over the weekend. The film grossed $120 million between Friday and Sunday in the United States and Canada and $88 million worldwide, according to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations.

"This is an exceptionally good opening for an animated film," said analyst David A. Gross, adding that the sequel has a "brand new" look and is an example of "inspired commercial cinema."

The film takes up the story of Miles Morales, half black, half Latino, who assumes his role as Spiderman after the death of Peter Parker.
